Olympic Torch Relay in Richmond Hill
The Olympic Torch Relay was greeted with much fanfare in Richmond Hill, as thousands came out to cheer on the Flame in support of our Canadian athletes. Beginning at Highway 7 and East Beaver Creek Road, the Relay made its way to the Langstaff Community Centre where a community celebration was held. Torchbearers were greeted with a heroes' welcome, as everyone wanted the chance to be close to the Torch. After a brief stop at Langstaff, the Relay continued along Bantry Avenue and then headed south on Yonge Street towards Langstaff Road where it was handed off to a Toronto Torchbearer.

In the spirit of the Olympics and in celebration of our athletes of all abilities, from the past, present and future - that evening residents were treated to free figure skating performances, a sledge hockey game, performances by the Richmond Hill Seniors' and Richmond Green High School choirs, as well as a public skate at the Elvis Stojko Arena.

The stands were packed for performances by the Richmond Training Centre Theatre Group; Starskate Skaters from the Richmond Hill Figure Skating Club; Junior Canadian Figure Skating Champion and Richmond Hill resident, Andrei Rogozine; the Canskate group from the Richmond Hill Figure Skating Club; as well as Olympic Ice Dancing hopefuls Paul Poirier and Vanessa Crone.

After the figure skating program, sledge hockey took centre ice, as the Markham Islanders and Durham Steelhawks played to a 2-2 tie.

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate the Olympic spirit with us!
