ROAD WATCH Honoured With MTO Award - July 13, 2009

Mission Statement
The Town of Richmond Hill ROAD WATCH Program is a community-based initiative that deals with the public's concern about dangerous and aggressive driving practices.

The ROAD WATCH Program gives residents an opportunity to report aggressive and unsafe driving to the police through the use of Citizen Report Forms. It is our objective to make our roads safe for everyone.

The Richmond Hill ROAD WATCH Program is community driven with York Regional Police undertaking the administrative and enforcement process with the support and participation of the Town of Richmond Hill.

ROAD WATCH

How ROAD WATCH Works
There are three main components to the ROAD WATCH program, AWARENESS, EDUCATION and ENFORCEMENT. We all know that enforcement alone will not work. We must involve people to take ownership of the problem of aggressive and unsafe driving practices so that they can be part of the solution and modify the driver's behavior and attitude.

AWARENESS of safe driving practices and promoting general road safety is accomplished through giving seminars, media coverage, advertising, public speaking engagements, and promotional material made available to community members.

EDUCATION is promoted at several levels. Our secondary school students are our future drivers and it is important for them to learn about the choices that they are making and how those choices will impact on their lives. We also plan to work with our secondary school students to develop road safety educational and awareness programs. Another avenue to explore is having the Driver Education program include a session on ROAD WATCH, how it works and what dangerous, aggressive driving is.

ENFORCEMENT of safety on the roads through ROAD WATCH assists police services to identify unsafe driving acts or "hot spots" that are traffic problem areas.
