After public review and consultation, Council approved the implementation of Phase I of the Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan (PCMP). The Plan, which was approved by Council on December 14, 2009, sets out short and long-term actions that will support an enhanced level of walking and cycling in the community. The goal of the PCMP is to create a safe, convenient, continuous and connected pedestrian and cycling plan within the Town where people are encouraged to use alternative modes of transportation other than the automobile. The Plan also supports the Town's new Strategic Plan, specifically addressing the goal of helping to build stronger connections in the community, both in terms of improving access to recreational offerings, trails, and cycling networks, as well as removing barriers to effective participation for all people in the community. Phase I of the PCMP includes approximately 75 km of signed bike routes created at a cost of more than $1 million, which is being supported by the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The PCMP is a unique project that requires the support of York Region and other municipal partners. Council also approved the sidewalk and trail prioritization evaluation process proposed by Town staff and further instructed them to begin identifying the infrastructure required to implement Phase II, which will include an emphasis on sidewalks and trails.
Creation of approximately 75 km of signed only bike routes, 57 km of signed bike routes with edge line or sharrows and 13 km of bike lanes on our roadways is slated to begin in spring 2010 and is expected to be completed by the fall.
Please note that if you live along any of the new bike routes impacted by the addition of pavement markings, you will be notified at least one week prior to any pavement marking being installed on your street.
