WHY?
Celebrated annually in more than 170 countries worldwide, Earth Day provides an opportunity for residents, organizations and governments to join together to discuss local environmental issues and explore planet-friendly changes. Richmond Hill participants will take one step towards a more sustainable future by planting 500 trees, and learning about the importance of improving air quality, protecting water resources, and reducing waste.

Trees are an important part of our ecosystem. They clean the air by absorbing pollutants and greenhouse gases; improve water quality by slowing stormwater runoff and storing harmful contaminants; save energy by providing shade; and create vibrant communities by diversifying neighbourhoods. Last year, with the help of community volunteers, approximately 14,000 trees and shrubs were planted in Richmond Hill!

In addition to Earth Day, there are many opportunities to improve our local environment in Richmond Hill, including Pitch-In Week (April 23 to 29), Healthy Yards (May 26), Mill Pond Splash (June 3) and various community tree planting and stewardship initiatives.
