Media Alert/Photo Opportunity - National Public Works Week - 05/14/2009

WHO?
Children climbing aboard dump trucks, the Town’s Engineering & Public Works (EPW) staff demonstrating equipment and mayors competing in a driving course challenge

WHAT?
Will be just some of the entertaining sights at the 12th annual National Public Works Week

WHEN & WHERE?
Taking place May 17-23 at the Town’s Operations Centre located at 1200 Elgin Mills Road East (between Leslie Street and Bayview Avenue on the north side) 

Elementary School Tours of the Operations Centre (tours last for two hours):

  • Tuesday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m. & 12:45 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. & 12:45 p.m.
  • Friday, May 22 at 9:30 a.m.
More than 500 students from 12 different schools will tour the Operations Centre.

York Municipalities Miller Cup ChallengeRichmond Green Snow Management Facility/Skateboard Park, 1300 Elgin Mills Road East (rain or shine)

  • Wednesday, May 20 from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The challenge will see EPW staff compete against other municipalities in a series of contests involving snow plows, loaders and trucks for the chance to win the coveted Miller Cup

  • Mayor’s Challenge - Mayor Dave Barrow will attempt to outmaneuver other area mayors in the driving course to reclaim the Mayors’ trophy
  • Media Challenge12 noon to 1 p.m.
New this year, members of the media are also invited to show off their skills. You will compete for bragging rights and a trophy by driving a full-size hybrid pickup truck through an obstacle course. Please RSVP by noon on Tuesday, May 19 to Rosanne Fritzsche at (905) 780-2950 to confirm attendance.
 

Operations Centre Public Open House (rain or shine),1200 Elgin Mills Road East

  • Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The day will feature fun activities for the entire family including equipment demonstrations, Green Bin and Blue Box sales and a charity barbecue.


WHY?
To celebrate National Public Works Week, this year’s theme of “Revitalize, Reinvest, Renew” raises awareness about the efforts of the Town’s Engineering & Public Works staff to renew local infrastructure, improve the quality of life of residents and ensure a safe future.
