Children of all ages “in the driver’s seat” of dump trucks, Town Engineering & Public Works department staff demonstrating equipment and mayors from throughout York Region racing around an obstacle course

Will be just a few of the sights to be seen during National Public Works Week (May 18-24)

At the Town’s Operations Centre at 1200 Elgin Mills Road East (between Leslie Street and Bayview Avenue on the north side) 

All activities will occur under the theme of “The Future is NOW,” because the work performed by public works staff now (through innovation, invention, and maintenance), helps to ensure a safe future for the community.

Elementary School Tours of the Operations Centre:  
  • Tuesday, May 20 at 9:30 a.m. & 12:45 p.m. (tours last for two hours)
  • Thursday, May 22 at 9:30 a.m. & 12:45 p.m. (tours last for two hours)
More than 400 students from nine different schools will receive tours of the Operations Centre.
York Municipalities Public Works Challenge  (rain or shine)
  • Wednesday, May 21 from 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The challenge will provide Mayor Dave Barrow and public works staff the opportunity to compete against other municipalities in a series of obstacle challenges for the Miller Cup.
Operations Centre Public Open House (rain or shine) 
  • Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The day will feature equipment demonstrations, Green Bin and Blue Box sales and a charity barbecue with proceeds going to Hill House Hospice and Richmond Hill Hospice.

For over 10 years, the Town has celebrated National Public Works Week by hosting festivities to honour the dedication and commitment put forth daily by public works employees.
