In honour of Holocaust Education Week, Ms. Walfish is officially launching her newest book, The Stars Will Guide You, which tells the little-known story of Italian rescuers who saved Jewish children during the Holocaust. These children were hidden in small Italian villages by righteous men and women and saved from deportation and certain death at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
One such child is survivor Esther Bem. Ms. Bem and her parents survived the Holocaust by hiding in Italy, where poor farmers in the mountains helped them under very difficult circumstances. She will provide her personal testimony and will relate to the experiences described in Ms. Walfish's book.
A brief segment from the documentary, A Debt to Honour, will be shown at the beginning of this multi-generational and multi-cultural program. The film chronicles the assistance of ordinary Italians who became extraordinary through their individual acts of courage. A book signing will follow the program.
