The Town’s G.I.S. professionals will lead hands-on workshops allowing the public to experience the exciting G.I.S. technologies at the Town and preview future capabilities. Participants will be able to interact with Town staff in demonstrations of 3-D mapping of the Town, Web-based interactive mapping, cartographic map creation, and mobile G.I.S. and Global Positioning System (G.P.S.) devices. G.I.S. is part of the Information Technology and Resource Services Division in the Corporate Services Department.
G.I.S. Day is part of Geography Awareness Week (G.A.W.) and is sponsored by organizations including the National Geographic Society, the Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (E.S.R.I.) and locally by ESRI Canada. For 13 years G.A.W. has been restoring geography to classrooms throughout the United States and Canada while demonstrating the breadth of geography and its relevance to almost any other subject. Each year approximately one and a half million students participate in activities related to the week.
The Town was recently honoured with an Award of Excellence for their latest RHgeoPortal project, presented in front of over 400 fellow GIS professionals.
