WHY?
|
At the event, 104 young athletes from a wide range of sports including baton twirling, snowboarding, ice hockey, martial arts, indoor rowing, canoe/kayak, chess, ringette, trampoline, lifesaving, gymnastics and baseball will receive an honourary plaque in recognition of their achievements. Members of Council will be on hand to officially present the awards to the athletes in a formal ceremony. Parents and coaches, whose support is crucial to the young competitors’ success, will also be on hand to help celebrate the athletes’ achievements.
This is an annual event to honour Richmond Hill athletes 18 years of age or younger, as individuals or teams who have won a provincial or national championship or have attained the highest level possible in their sport in the last year. Individual athletes qualify if they are residents of Richmond Hill or have won as a representative of Richmond Hill. Teams qualify regardless of their residency as they are representatives of Richmond Hill. The local athletes of today may be the stars of tomorrow, as past recipients include figure skaters Elvis Stojko and Emanuel Sandhu.
