| WHY? |
This year marks the eighth year the Town has participated in National Public Works Week (May 14 to 21), which is a time to raise awareness about public works and recognize the impact these staff make in the community. This year?s theme is "Public works is everywhere you look." The Town will be holding three major events during the week.
To start celebrations, on the Saturday the EPW Department staff will hold an Open House featuring displays, demonstrations, tours, family activities and a free barbecue lunch at the Operations Centre. This is an opportunity for the community to become acquainted with staff and learn about the services.
On Wednesday, the Town is hosting a Public Works Challenge event with other York Region municipalities. The challenge consists of teams made up of public works staff competing against each other in various obstacle courses using public works equipment. The event also includes a "Mayor?s Challenge," where Mayors drive a dump truck through an obstacle course.
Also during the week, the Town will host over 500 Grade 5 students for tours of the Operations Centre, educating them about the public works systems and various programs, including water, sewers and streets. |
