RICHMOND HILL COUNCIL ADOPTS A CODE OF CONDUCT
Unanimous Agreement on Openness and Accountability
RICHMOND HILL – Last night Richmond Hill Council announced the unanimous approval of a Council Code of Conduct. Having a Code of Conduct demonstrates Council’s continued commitment to enhancing openness and accountability at the Town.
“The development of a Council Code of Conduct ensures that all members of Council and the residents have a clear understanding of what is expected of Council as they conduct the business of Richmond Hill,” said Mayor Dave Barrow. “Although there are a number of existing rules and policies that we already must adhere to, this new Council Code of Conduct goes above and beyond these. Together, we were able to develop a document that we all support.”
After months of careful consideration, the Council Code of Conduct will provide guidance on issues related to the acceptance of gifts and benefits, confidential information, Council staff relations and the use of municipal property. Council has also approved the hiring of an Integrity Commissioner to provide impartial, third party advice to Council and to respond to any compliance issues.
“As elected representatives, we play an important role in leading the residents and businesses of the Town so they may come together to build the community that is desired by all,” said the Mayor. “In order to be successful, Council must continue to maintain the trust of the community through clear accountability and openness in its actions.”
The Council Code of Conduct will come into effect once an Integrity Commissioner has been appointed, expected to be late summer 2010.
