What are Major Policy Directions? For the past two years, the Town has been developing a future Official Plan vision for Richmond Hill based on extensive public consultation through People Plan Richmond Hill and numerous background studies and discussion papers. Building the Town’s future Official Plan vision includes the integration of three major components:
• Guiding Principles identified what is important to the community in Richmond Hill within a land use context • Urban Structure identified where we need to focus growth, development and management of resources • Major Policy Directions will tell us how we can achieve that vision through land use policy
Combined, these three components act as a blueprint for writing the Town’s new Official Plan.

What is contained in the Recommended Major Policy Directions Report? During the Fall of 2009, recommended policy directions were brought forward to the Official Plan Task Force on October 1, 2009. The Major Policy Directions Report was later endorsed by Council.
The staff report recommends major policy directions for the Town’s new Official Plan based on the Environmental Policy Review, the Economic Policy Review and the Housing and Residential Intensification Study Recommended Directions Reports. Recommended major policy directions will speak to:
• Building a Holistic Environmental Policy Approach • Planning for Economic Opportunities over the Long-Term • Planning a Place-Based Housing and Residential Intensification Policy Approach
