Trees in New Subdivisions
Urban Forestry Home

If you are a resident in a new subdivision or infill lot, tree planting may be carried out either by the Town or by the developer of the subdivision. Primarily, new tree plantings are initiated by the Town. Typically the process begins by inspecting the new subdivisions/infill lots for potential planting sites in December/January for spring planting and July/August for fall planting. Once the inspection has been completed, a small, white mark is placed on the curb face fronting the planting site (with intended planting approximately 1.75m from the curb face). If you are interested in the tree planting schedule or have questions, please call (905) 771-8800.

Interested in the care of newly planted trees? See the Watering of Trees section.

Street Tree Location Selection Criteria
In order to enhance tree planting success and help reduce future maintenance concerns, the following guidelines (related to Town-planted trees) should be followed*:

  • 6.1m (20') minimum to streetlight/hydro poles
  • 10.7m (35') minimum between trees (Town and private trees), screen plantings handled on an individual basis
  • 2m (6') minimum from fire hydrants, communications/cable pedestals, hydro underground vault transformers, Canada Post Superboxes
  • 12.2m (40') from road intersections (from the intersection of the two curb lines)
  • 1.2m (4') minimum from driveways
  • 6.1m (20') minimum from signs
  • 2.5m (8') minimum from pillars/fences
  • Avoid planting in swales due to excess water
* Some exceptions or alternate locations may be selected relating to unusual circumstances.  Generally, tree species are consistant on the street, or portion of a street, to help long-term maintenance schedules.

With future generations and the health of the trees in mind, it is important to adhere to these distances. If a tree was not planted adjacent to your house, please consider the above criteria prior to calling for an inspection.

Where are developers responsible for street tree planting as of January 2008?
  • Bayview Glen Subdivision - bordered by Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue, Highway 7 and approximately Silver Linden Drive.
  • Fontaine Bleu Subdivision - bordered by Bayview Aveue, Paradelle Drive and Bloomington Road.
  • Lebovic Subdivision - bordered by Nantucket Drive, Lebovic Drive, Barnwood Drive and Maroon Crescent.
  • McLeod's Landing (Phillips Lake) Subdivision - bordered by Bathurst Street, Yonge Street and Jefferson Road south Provincial lands.
The Developers Consultant(s) will oversee the planting of trees in the above-noted Subdivisions. Please call your developer or builder to find out the name and number of the appropriate consultant and direct any concerns you may have with the trees directly to them. If you have any difficulty finding this information, please call the Urban Forestry Section at (905) 771-8800.
