The new
Official Plan for the Town of Richmond Hill is a major area of focus for the Policy Section. The Town's current plan is more than 25-years-old and Richmond Hill has experienced significant growth since its creation. In order to deal with these changing circumstances effectively, the Town needs a new Official Plan. A variety of
background studies and discussion papers, as well as a public consultation process, will be conducted to inform the Plan.
Studies, Research and Major Tasks
The Policy Section is also responsible for the preparation of
secondary plans for individual communities and major zoning bylaws, as well as the development of the
Downtown Design and Land Use Strategy and the undertaking of other
studies focused on areas such as housing, commercial and retail policy. As well, the Section conducts planning research and analysis of population and development trends.

People Plan Richmond Hill
The Policy Section is actively involved in the
People Plan Richmond Hill process with the Office of Strategic Initiatives. This process will result in a new Strategic Plan and Official Plan. The Strategic Plan provides direction for all Town policy, including the Official Plan, and provides the overarching framework for other function-specific policy documents, such as the Transportation Master Plan, long-term financial plan and Parks Master Plan.
