Sewer Line Smoke Testing

York Region and the Town of Richmond Hill
INFLOW & INFILTRATION REDUCTION PROGRAM
SEWER LINE SMOKE TESTING

The Town of Richmond Hill, in conjunction with the Regional Municipality of York, is conducting smoke testing on the following streets during November:

• Birch Avenue
• Cividale Court
• Trilogy Court
• Oak Avenue
• Avenue Road (Carville to Edgar)
• Pearson Avenue (Oak to Edgar)
• Colborne Avenue
• Maple Avenue
• Wenlock Avenue ( Colborne to Sussex)
• Palmer Avenue (Bayview to Conestoga)
• Conestoga Avenue
• Paliser Crescent North
• Paliser Crescent South (Atha to Essex)
• Atha Avenue (Paliser to Glouster)

A “SMOKE TEST” survey assists our inspection crews in locating breaks, defects and potentially inappropriate connections in the sewer system. The smoke that you see coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is:

• Non- toxic
• Non- staining
• Has no odour
• White to gray in colour
• Creates no fire hazard

The smoke should not enter your home unless you have defective plumbing or dry drain traps. Prior to the test it is advisable to turn taps on for a short time and pour two to three cups of water into all floor drains ( don’t forget your basement drains).

Three to five days before the smoke test will be scheduled further information will be hand delivered to each home or business within the project limits of the smoke testing.

What should I do if smoke gets into the house?

Do not become alarmed. Open windows, turn on exhaust fans and note the location of the smoke. The smoke will dissipate in a few minutes. Please contact the Project Manager listed below or speak to one of the crew members conducting the test to let them know.

IMPORTANT! If there is any individual in your home or business who has respiratory problems and is immobile, please notify the Project Manager prior to testing.
