Richmond Hill Wins Mayors' Megawatt Challenge!
Mayor William F. Bell, on behalf of the Town of Richmond Hill, accepted an award from the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority for winning the Mayors' Megawatt Challenge for the most Energy Efficient City/Town Hall by implementing energy conservation measures and best operating practices. Council first endorsed the Town's participation in the Mayors' Megawatt Challenge in February 2004 and the Town has since achieved a 33 per cent megawatt reduction and has reduced energy costs by approximately $175,000 (in total, the Challenge reduced costs by approximately $360,000). The Mayors' Megawatt Challenge, launched in May 2003, is a program that supports the Living City and is designed to benchmark and pool energy management knowledge and expertise to assist municipalities in collectively achieving at least one megawatt of electrical demand savings during 2003/2004. Richmond Hill is one of 16 participating municipalities and has been committed to reducing energy consumption, air pollution and greenhouse gasses since 1996. The Mayors' Megawatt Challenge is just one component of the Town's Clean Air Initiatives Local Action Plan - the Town's management strategy for reducing its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
