The 'thINK FOOD' project began as a pilot project with Town staff in July 2002, and now has expanded to include the entire community. To participate, all you have to do is drop off any used inkjet cartridges or cell phones at a specially marked box (located in many Town buildings) and they will then be recycled into new products and generating funds for the food bank in the process. Just a few cartridges could be worth a jar of peanut butter, a carton of milk or even a whole meal!
By being part of this great project, the Town will help divert some of the 30 million inkjet cartridges dumped in landfills in Canada each year. Each used cartridge takes more than 1,000 years to decompose, and by participating in this great cause will help benefit those in need of special support within the community.
So far, the Town of Richmond Hill has 11 collections throughout the community and has accumulated 193 items. This is equal to approximately 400 lbs of food for the local Food Bank, but much more can be done. So turn your used inkjet cartridges and cell phones into food.
