Complete Your Census The Census of Population provides a unique source of information about Canada and its population. The census is the primary source of reliable demographic data for specific groups such as lone-parent families, seniors and language groups. The census provides data for areas as small as a city neighbourhood or as large as the country itself.
Because the census is conducted every five years and the questions are similar each time, it is possible to compare changes in the demographics of Canada’s population over time. Census of Population data are used to: • determine representation in Parliament • calculate transfer payments between levels of government • plan important public services including daycare, select sites for schools, fire and police protection.
