The Public Works Operations Division of the Community Services Department assumes responsibility for the continuous, uninterrupted operation of the sewage collection system. This includes a network of sewer mains and the operation of six sewage lift stations. Sanitary sewage is discharged through a network of piping and is treated by Durham/York sewage systems.

Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Survey Inspection and Testing
York Region is starting sanitary sewer evaluation survey inspections and testing in order to identify inflow and infiltration sources.
Identification and repair of inflow and infiltration sources will also help to alleviate problems, such as basement flooding and surcharging of manholes, and will reduce wastewater treatment costs. The inspections and testing will begin in November 2015. The work consists primarily of inspections involving smoke testing and dye testing of the sanitary sewers. Sewer Backups
The Town of Richmond Hill’s Maintenance and Operations staff are on call (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) to deal with emergencies like watermain breaks and sewer backups.

What should I do if I experience a sewer backup in my home?

It travels to the Region of York and to the Town of Richmond Hill through a network of piping and metering points. The Town of Richmond Hill does not treat the water, but monitors it to ensure quality and safety standards are met. Concerns with regard to taste and odour of water should be referred to the Region of York at 1-800-361-5653.

The maintenance and operation of the Town's water distribution system is the responsibility of the Public Works Operations Division of the Community Services Department. This includes line valves, hydrants, services to property line, water meter installation and repairs, water discolouration, water on/off, water main repairs and location.
