The following is a statement from Mayor Dave Barrow in response to the Ontario government’s announcement of their first stage of re-opening:
“The City of Richmond Hill, alongside its residents, businesses and public health partners, has worked hard to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Once again, I thank everyone who is continuing to do their part in the fight against this virus.
While we are eager to reopen our park amenities and community centres, it must be done thoughtfully, not hastily, to protect the health and safety of our community. Together, we have made good progress to help flatten the curve and we want to ensure that trend continues. We are taking steps to plan for a full and safe recovery, with proper precautions in place for our staff and residents, but these things take time and careful consideration. In the meantime, all City park amenities, including tennis courts, dog parks and sports fields will remain closed until further notice. Community centres, arenas and other training facilities will also remain closed. Our neighbours in Markham and Vaughan are taking a similar approach, as we all work to stay safe.
Our parks and trails do remain open for those who wish to walk or cycle through. I remind residents if you are visiting a park or trail, please practice physical distancing, do not use any closed park amenities and do not congregate in groups. These restrictions continue to be in place to support the health and safety of all of our community.
As the economy begins to reopen, I also ask private businesses to heed the health guidance provided by the provincial government and to take action to protect employees and customers. Richmond Hill businesses can find help to address these challenges by visiting RichmondHill.ca/HelpforBusinesses.
As others have said, this is a marathon, not a sprint. I want to thank everyone in Richmond Hill again for their efforts in protecting each other and our community and for your continued patience and cooperation. I encourage you to continue to practice physical distancing and good hand hygiene. Let’s keep moving forward together to ensure a safe recovery.”
