Richmond Hill – Fireworks can be fun to watch for many of us, but when not used safely they can also be dangerous, causing fires and injuries – even death. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional display, instead of doing your own. The City of Richmond Hill along with Richmond Hill’s Fire and Emergency Services encourages anyone who plans to use fireworks to exercise caution and know the rules.
Know when fireworks are allowed – Fireworks are allowed on Victoria Day and Canada Day as well as the day before and after each of these holidays. Outside of these days, you must obtain a permit if you would like to host your own fireworks display.
Be considerate of neighbours and pets - Please limit your use of fireworks to between the hours of dusk to reduce the noise and disruption to those around you.
Buy fireworks from an authorized vendor – Stores authorized to sell fireworks will have a permit from Richmond Hill’s Fire and Emergency Services displayed in the store.
Choose your location wisely – Fireworks are NOT allowed on public property, including parks, streets and open spaces.Make sure you have enough space. Pick an area that is at least 30m x 30m with no trees or power lines. Spectators should view from at least 20m away.
Use a safe set-up – Use protective eyewear and footwear when lighting fireworks. Bury longer fireworks half-way in the ground or sand and pack the soil and sand around it. Keep a large pail of water or garden hose nearby.
Be aware of wind – Keep an eye on the wind direction and strength; do not set off fireworks when winds are strong.
Act responsibly – Adults should be the only ones to light fireworks. Follow the directions on the manufacturer’s label of the fireworks packaging. Never put fireworks in your pocket. Never hold fireworks when lighting them and never throw them.
Properly dispose of fireworks – Place used fireworks in a pail of water, including any that were lit but did not fire (never try to relight a firework). Soak them thoroughly overnight. Drain the water and put the extinguished fireworks in the garbage. To safely dispose of unused fireworks, contact York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423. Unused fireworks do not belong in garbage, blue boxes, green bins or at drop-off depots.
