Richmond Hill's Fence By-law includes rules for putting up fences in front yards, backyards, side yards and around swimming pools.

Backyards and side yards

The Fence By-law says that backyard and side yard fences can be a maximum of 1.8 m (6 ft.) in height.

Front yards

Front yard fences can be a maximum height of 1.2 m (4 ft.), except on corner properties. Property owners with corner lots should contact the by-law department prior to constructing their fences, as there are specific provisions with respect to these types of lots.

Swimming pools

Property owners must follow the regulations of Richmond Hill's Site Alteration and Pool Enclosure Permit when installing a swimming pool, hot tub, decorative ponds, fish ponds and spas.

Fences must be constructed in accordance with the provisions of the fence by-law pertaining to pool enclosures.
