Mary Dawson Park - Construction to begin summer 2013
Mary Dawson Park is located on Don Head Village Boulevard at Lund Street, across from St Anne’s Catholic School. The 2.3 hectare park was built in 1981 and renovated in 1994 to include a basketball court, ball diamond, open lawn and playground structures. The park forms an important link in the Richvale Greenway system.
There are three underlying goals that drive the redevelopment of the park:
1. To create a memorable destination along the greenway system. 2. To strengthen the connection between the park’s design and the life story of Mary Dawson 3. To augment the park’s hydrological system in order to strengthen its ecological function, while beautifying the park’s entrance.
The existing basket basketball court, baseball field and playground area will stay in approximately the same locations they are currently found.
A Public Open House was held in October 2011 for residents to review and comment on the proposed redevelopment plans. In response to the comments received by residents, staff have revised the concept to reflect the following changes:
Delete the garden area including trellis, oval pathway system and planting.
Delete pathway along the outfield of the baseball diamond
Address the drainage issue located at the northwest corner of the park.
Pending budget approval, this project will be constructed in the summer of 2013.
