Starting this summer, Richmond Hill Public Library’s (RHPL) Central Branch will undergo its first major renovation since opening in 1993. Changes to the branch will include more study space, updated furniture and select finishes, more electrical outlets on the third floor, a modular stage and event space, and an interactive play area for families and little ones.

New, modular furniture will increase study space capacity by over 40% at a time when the branch sees up to 40,000 visitors per month, and the event space will allow the library to hold largescale events for up to 200 community members. 

In order to minimize the overall impact of the renovation on community members, Central Branch will close for the month of August. During this time, additional programs and services will move to RHPL’s three remaining branches, and the hours of Richvale Branch will be extended. In September, Central Branch will reopen with limited spaces and hours until work is complete later this fall. While renovations continue in the branch, team members will be available to support students, parents and educators as they enter the new school year.

Located at the intersection of Yonge and Major Mackenzie, Central Branch is where downtown Richmond Hill begins, and it’s at the edge of where the City of Richmond Hill will build Dave Barrow Civic Square. It contains a fully functioning café space, our Creative Studio, Local History Room, and several rentable meeting spaces. With a 20% increase in visitors from 2023-2025, these renovations being completed by the City of Richmond Hill and Richmond Hill Public Library are necessary to meet community needs.
