Staff from Richmond Hill’s National Public Works Week (NPWW) Organizing Committee joined the Mayor and Council to present cheques to Hospice Richmond Hill and Hill House Hospice. This year’s NPWW raised $2,000 for each hospice, raising the total amount donated to almost $20,000 since 2006! Richmond Hill’s National Public Works Week events highlight the important role Public Works professionals play in everyday life and illustrate how they contribute to building vibrant, connected and sustainable communities. The staff organizing committee – comprised of Public Works professionals from Richmond Hill - also has a great impact on residents’ lives through its fundraising efforts. Hill House Hospice and Hospice Richmond Hill both provide great professional residential services to residents living with terminal illnesses. Council voted unanimously to award money to six young Richmond Hill figure skaters from the Elvis Stojko Bursary. Monies from the fund will be dispersed to Gabrielle Daleman ($1,500), Denis Margalik ($1,000), Conrad Orzel ($250), Zachary Daleman ($500), Andrei Rogozine ($750) and Roman Sadovsky ($1,000). The bursary, created 14 years ago to honour the achievements of World Champion figure skater, Olympic medalist and former Richmond Hill resident Elvis Stojko, assists local figure skaters who have distinguished themselves in competitive skating and who live or train in Richmond Hill. The bursary is funded through Town fundraising efforts and is supported by Mr. Stojko himself. Mayor Dave Barrow and Council members presented Lucas Gismondi, Owner of Aerial PhotoWorks, the William F. Bell Young Entrepreneur Award. Mr. Gismondi started his business idea from his passion for photography and videography. Through the Richmond Hill Small Business Enterprise Centre’s (SBEC) Summer Company Program Mr. Gismondi not only learned how to operate a business, but also learned about marketing and made a little money for himself. Richmond Hill’s SBEC’s Summer Company Program in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure/Ministry of Research and Innovation assisted Mr. Gismondi and 12 other young entrepreneurs with a $3,000 grant, as well as training and mentorship. The William F. Bell Young Entrepreneur Award was introduced in 2006 and recognizes successful, young entrepreneurs who are participating in the Summer Company program. Since 2004, the Summer Company Program has inspired many young, creative people to explore entrepreneurship as a career option.
