Ninety Years of Discovery and Exploration
Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory Turns 90!
RICHMOND HILL – This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory (RHDDO). Since opening on May 31, 1935, the RHDDO has been home to Canada’s largest telescope and a centre for astronomical discovery, education and community programming.
To celebrate the anniversary, residents are invited to explore the night sky, discover the cosmos and learn about the history of this unique site through exhibitions across the site.
- Saturday, May 31: Bring your binoculars or telescope, a flashlight and folding chair for a Stargazing Party in Observatory Park. Learn to read star charts and pick up basic observing techniques from local astronomy enthusiasts. The Administration Building is open for self-guided tours at 8:30 p.m. and stargazing begins at sunset!
- Saturdays and Sundays: Drop by from 1-5 p.m. for self-guided tours of the RHDDO’s historic Administration Building and Observatory Dome
