Notice of Study Commencement - Stormwater Master Plan
Richmond Hill’s Stormwater System
The City of Richmond Hill’s stormwater system is comprised of approximately 620 kilometres of storm sewers, 18,000 catchbasins, 10,000 maintenance holes, and 1,000 storm culverts, 100 stormwater management ponds, 100 manufactured treatment devices and 90 low impact development features.
The City’s stormwater management system is interconnected with the York Region system that is predominately located within the Regional roads. The stormwater infrastructure within the City also interacts with the headwaters of the Don, Humber and Rouge River Watersheds.
Stormwater Master Plan
The City of Richmond Hill is undertaking a City-wide Stormwater Master Plan. The Master Plan is a long-term comprehensive study to ensure that stormwater is effectively managed in a way that protects Richmond Hill’s residents and property as well as the environment in a sustainable way. The outcome of this study will serve as a decision support tool for the prioritization of future capital works in a financially responsible manner.
The Master Plan Process
The Stormwater Master Plan is being conducted by T.Y. Lin International Canada Inc. following Approach No.1 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (2024, as amended) under the Environmental Assessment Act. As the study progresses, the City will consult and engage with the public, Indigenous communities, government agencies and local advisory groups to shape the Master Plan and contribute towards the preferred solutions and recommendations.
To facilitate community input, a Public Open House will be held tentatively in January of 2027. The notice of the open house will be made available on the City’s website and on the Stormwater Master Plan web page.
Results from this study will be documented through a number of presentations and reports that will be made available for a public review period. When available, residents, Indigenous communities and other interested persons or groups will be informed of when and where the documents can be reviewed.
