Request for Public Comment - Park Name - Heron View Park
Council is requesting public comment in accordance with the City’s Policy for Naming and Renaming City Parks, Open Space and Recreation Facilities.
The City of Richmond Hill is proposing to name a park within the park and natural heritage system as follows:
Heron View Park
(located at 0 Bawden Drive, north of Elgin Mills Road East and Leslie Street)
“Heron View Park” refers to the Great Blue Heron, which was named Richmond Hill’s Bird Friendly City bird in 2024. The proposed park name will provide further recognition and tribute to this city symbol and the nearby Heron rookery.
Birds are essential in maintaining healthy and resilient ecosystems. Birds such as the Great Blue Heron remind the public of the importance of protecting our environment and the connected Greenway System throughout the city.
The Great Blue Heron is recognized by its S-shaped neck, long legs and greyish-blue upper body. These birds can be found across southern Canada and often are seen standing perfectly still or slowly wading into wetlands and ponds in places like Newberry Park, Richmond Green and Rumble Pond. They breed in large congregations called “rookeries,” one of which is located in Richmond Hill, just north of the proposed Heron View Park.
