Dr. Brenda Wastasecoot Shares Arts Based Auto-ethnographic Journeying of a Cree Adult Educator

RICHMOND HILL – In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2022, the City of Richmond Hill and the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts invite residents to a free event featuring guest speaker Dr. Brenda Wastasecoot.

Dr. Wastasecoot is Cree from Churchill, Manitoba. She is a mother, grandmother, and great-great Aunt of the Wastasecoot and Brightnose family. Their roots begin from the York Factory fur trading post, flowing south along the Hudson Bay railway to Winnipeg. 

Dr. Wastasecoot is currently an Assistant Professor, teaching Indigenous Studies at the University of Toronto. She consults with the Arts and Science Faculty members to better reflect the historic truth and open doors to reconciliation. Her doctoral dissertation, “Showing and Telling the Story of Nikis: Arts Based Auto-ethnographic Journeying of a Cree Adult Educator”, speaks to the residential school policy of removal and separation of families, bringing light to contemporary challenges faced by Indigenous communities.
