New and Replacement Projects Required for Growth of the City

Richmond Hill – Richmond Hill Council approved the Urban Master Environmental Servicing Plan (UMESP) that sets guidelines for water and wastewater infrastructure that is needed to support the build-out of the City’s planned growth areas.

These areas, such as the Richmond Hill Centre, Yonge and 16th Avenue and the Local Village Centre, are identified for intensification, meaning more homes and businesses planned in these geographic areas, in the City to 2051.

The UMESP identifies a total of 15 water improvement projects which includes 4.2 km of new and replacement watermain pipes and 20 wastewater improvement projects, which will see the installation of 11.1 km of new or replaced sewers for increased capacity to support intensification.

Currently, Richmond Hill maintains 665 km of watermain pipes that bring safe, fresh drinking water to residents in their homes and 608 km of sewers that carry sewage and wastewater safely away from homes to treatment plants. The UMESP is vital to maintaining the current services to the residents and ensuring that they are also available to the future communities where major growth is projected.
