Richmond Hill Continues to Celebrate Canada 150
Street Banner Contest Entries Selected and FCM Community Leaders Chosen to Represent the Town
RICHMOND HILL – Richmond Hill is excited to showcase the selected artwork of the Street Banner Contest, whose unique creations celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation have been selected. These pieces of art will be displayed along Yonge Street in Richmond Hill.
Held earlier this year, the contest was funded by the Government of Canada and is one of Richmond Hill’s many Canada 150 themed initiatives. Richmond Hill residents were encouraged to design and submit up to five pieces of visual art including photography, digital art, collage, painting, illustration and printmaking. The theme for the contest was “Past, Present and Future,” and encouraged members of the community to reflect on their history in Richmond Hill, the current strengths of the community and the possibilities for its future.
“Thank you to everyone who submitted their beautiful artwork for this contest,” said Mayor Dave Barrow. “It wasn’t an easy decision to select 20 out of the more than 60 submissions we received. We are excited to display the selected entries as part of our town’s Canada 150 celebrations and to showcase the community’s many great artistic talents.”
Residents and visitors alike will be able to view the chosen street banners portraying colourful and vibrant pictures of the town’s lakes and forests, plants and animals, and some of the many historic sites. The street banners will be installed in May 2017 along Yonge Street between Major Mackenzie Drive and Crosby Avenue.
Please see the below backgrounder for a list of the artist’s names. To view the selected Street Banner Contest entries, please visit RichmondHill.ca/Canada150.
In addition to the banner winners, Richmond Hill also announced that Ward 6 Councillor Godwin Chan, along with Richmond Hill residents Jim Vollmershausen and Phil Shepherd, have been nominated and selected as Community Leaders, representing Richmond Hill in the Canada 150 Community Leaders network. The Canada 150 Community Leaders network, initiated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), in partnership with the Government of Canada, creates a network of Community Leaders from hundreds of municipalities across the country, ensuring the municipal voice is front-and-centre during the Canada 150 year-long celebrations.
“I am honoured to be chosen, along with Mr. Vollmershausen and Mr. Shepherd, to serve as Community Leaders for Richmond Hill,” said Ward 6 Councillor Godwin Chan. “I know we will do our best to represent our community at the many Richmond Hill Canada 150 events. We hope to see everyone at the celebrations.”
