RICHMOND HILL – Richmond Hill Ward 6 Councillor Godwin Chan was acclaimed to the National Board of Directors for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) at its annual conference May 30 to June 2. This will be Councillor Chan’s second year on the Board.
“I am humbled and honoured to have the support of municipal peers to serve another term on FCM's Board of Directors,” said Councillor Chan. “I look forward to helping FCM voice the needs of local communities directly to the Federal Government for policy support and resources to help address issues in Richmond Hill and across Canada.”
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of Canada’s municipalities, speaking for over 2,000 municipalities and communities representing more than 90 per cent of Canada’s population. Its national Board is comprised of municipal leaders from across Canada and meets quarterly to set policy priorities.
FCM’s successful advocacy with the federal government recently led to the Building Canada Fund (BCF), a long-term, dedicated funding source for infrastructure improvements providing $14 Billion over 10 years. The new BCF, announced by the Prime Minister in York Region in February 2014, is committed in the Federal Budget and will help Richmond Hill and York Region address infrastructure gaps to better meet community needs. In addition, FCM’s Joint Protocol on locating cellular transmission towers helps to clarify the role of municipalities in the cell tower process, while the National Municipal Rail Safety Working Group continues to work with the government to ensure the safe transportation of dangerous goods by rail.
“It’s great that Godwin is continuing the tradition of Richmond Hill being represented on the FCM Board,” said Mayor Dave Barrow. “His FCM work will help keep Richmond Hill and regional issues such as funding public transit in the spotlight.”

Richmond Hill was also previously represented by Regional & Local Councillor Brenda Hogg who retired from FCM after 17 years on the Board. First elected to the Board in 1997, Councillor Hogg held many significant offices with FCM including Vice-President-at-Large, Chair of the Ontario Regional Committee from 1999 to 2002, Chair of the Social Economic Development Committee and Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on International Relations, among others. She was the longest-serving director in the history of FCM.
