Richmond Hill Councillor Re-elected to National Board of Directors
Ward 6 Councillor Godwin Chan Re-elected to FCM Board for fourth term
RICHMOND HILL – Richmond Hill Ward 6 Councillor Godwin Chan was re-elected to the 2017-2018 National Board of Directors for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) at its annual conference on June 4, 2017. This is Councillor Chan’s fourth term advocating on behalf of Richmond Hill.
“It is a true honour to be elected by your peers, including other Mayors and Councillors,” said Councillor Chan. “With the privilege to serve on the National Board as a Director, I look forward to continuing to make contributions to municipal issues at the national level, as well as learning best practices to help move our community forward.”
“It’s great to have Richmond Hill represented at a national level on the FCM Board,” said Mayor Dave Barrow. “Councillor Chan’s FCM work will help keep our town and region at the forefront of policy and program matters, ensuring the Federal government is aware of the great impact local governments have on their communities.”
Councillor Chan has served on the following FCM Standing Committees: Community Safety & Crime Prevention; International Relations; Municipal Finance & Intergovernmental Arrangements; and Municipal Infrastructure & Transportation Policy. This year, he looks forward to continuing work to advance issues that matter to our communities, such as Federal investments in infrastructure, clean and waste water, social housing, and community safety.
As a strong advocate for the Yonge subway extension, Councillor Chan will work with the FCM Board to seek opportunities to provide input into the design of the new Canada Infrastructure Bank. He also plans to monitor the 2017/18 review of Canada’s Railway Safety Act. Having been chosen as one of Richmond Hill’s Canada 150 Community Leaders, a FCM initiative with Heritage Canada, Councillor Chan will participate in celebrations of the Canada 150 this year.
The FCM is the national voice of Canada’s municipalities, speaking for almost 2,000 cities and communities, representing 90 per cent of Canada’s population. Its national Board is comprised of municipal leaders from across Canada and meets quarterly to set policy priorities positions on key municipal issues impacting on local communities from coast to coast.
