City Publishes 2019 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan Report

RICHMOND HILL – Richmond Hill is committed to being an accessible, inclusive community for everyone. Yesterday, Council approved the City’s 2019 Accessibility Status Report that highlights progress made to date on its 2018-2022 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan and implementation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). 

Of note, in 2019, the City:

• Made significant changes to its employee recruitment program to make the process more accessible to all
• Provided automated access to accessible document templates for all staff
• Piloted a new summer camp – Camp AdaptAbility – offering an opportunity for teens with disabilities to have an enjoyable camp experience in a specialized setting
• Carefully considered accessibility needs in the design and construction of the Ed Sackfield Arena and Fitness Centre as well as the Oak Ridges Library 

The City completed all deliverables planned for 2019. The report outlines the variety of activities and initiatives implemented to meet legislated requirements and provides programs and services that are more accessible to the community.

The City’s accessibility work is guided by an 11 member citizen Accessibility Advisory Committee. The Committee met throughout the year to review site and construction plans for new and existing municipal facilities, provided comments on policies and procedures, and discussed opportunities to improve accessibility at the City for residents and visitors.
