Statement from Acting Mayor DiPaola in Support of Subway Extension to Richmond Hill
Today, the Province of Ontario announced exciting news for our city – confirming plans that the Yonge North Subway Extension will bring two subway stations right into Richmond Hill.
This marks a significant milestone for this major infrastructure project and a pivotal moment for our community. The subway extension is a foundation piece in our bold vision for Richmond Hill Centre. It will help connect our residents and businesses easily to opportunities across the GTHA and bring new investment into Richmond Hill.
Richmond Hill Centre will be a place where all forms of transportation come together – a hub of activity at the heart of the GTHA. It will be a vibrant and healthy community, defined by pedestrian-oriented, well-connected streets, parks and gathering places. It will spark the creation of innovative economic possibilities and thousands of new jobs. Our vision will see Richmond Hill Centre become a world-leading urban growth centre and a community of choice for all.
We are proud of our plans for the Richmond Hill Centre area and thank our partners at York Region and the province for recognizing the incredible potential of this development. I invite residents to watch for opportunities this spring to learn more and participate in our planning efforts for the area.
As a past member of the Richmond Hill Centre Working Group and current member of the York Region Transit Board, I have been advocating since 1998 the Yonge North Subway extension, and more recently, multiple stops in Richmond Hill. I’m very excited and proud to see this vision now come to life.
As the subway project moves ahead, the City will also be working closely with our partners to improve the existing area around the subway line. From enhanced public spaces and trails, better east-west connections for pedestrians and cyclists to neighbourhood parks and amenities, creative ways to reduce noise and improved architectural treatments, Richmond Hill residents will benefit from more than just the transformative and convenient new transportation options.
This subway plan marks the beginning of an exciting path for Richmond Hill’s future and our Council and the City are fully on board with helping it become a reality.
