I welcome today’s announcement confirming funding from the federal government for the Yonge North Subway Extension that will bring two subway stations into the City of Richmond Hill.  

Earlier this year, our Council called on the federal government to commit to broad and substantial funding for the subway extension to help the local, provincial and federal economies emerge stronger from the COVID-19 pandemic. I am grateful for the federal government’s support, as well as the support of our provincial and regional partners, in helping bring to life this critical infrastructure project.

This subway will be a game changer for Richmond Hill, York Region and the GTHA. As past Chair of the Richmond Hill Centre Project, I always viewed the Yonge North Subway Extension as the most significant and exciting development for the future of Richmond Hill. Not only will it contribute to our Council’s strategic priority of improving ease of movement around the city and strengthening our connectivity throughout the GTHA, but it will also form the foundation of our plans for the Richmond Hill Centre area. 

The Richmond Hill Centre area will be a community of choice for residents, visitors and businesses, where all forms of transportation come together. We are excited to move forward with our planning for this vibrant and healthy community, defined by pedestrian-oriented, well-connected streets, parks and gathering places, and supported by the subway extension.

With this federal funding, and continued support from our local, regional and provincial partners, we are now one step closer to realizing our bold vision for the Richmond Hill Centre. I look forward to continuing to work together as we bring the subway to Richmond Hill.
