The heavy wind and rain that passed through the region on Saturday (May 21) caused extensive tree damage and power outages throughout Richmond Hill.

Tree Cleanup

City crews are continuing with cleanup, but it is going to take some time. Our priority is clearing fallen trees and debris from roads, sidewalks and blocked driveways. Crews will then move on to clearing trees and debris from boulevards, parks and trails.

If you see downed power lines or broken equipment, do not go near it. Stay back at least 10m (30 feet) and call 911.

Please also stay clear of fallen trees. You can report fallen or damaged trees on public property through our online customer service portal.

Trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. Consider consulting an arborist to assess the condition of damaged trees. The City has suspended the need for residents to apply for a tree permit for storm damaged trees on private property. At this time you do not need a permit to remove fallen, hazardous or severely storm damaged trees. However, we recommend you document with photos before any work takes place.

If you have tree debris on your property, visit RichmondHill.ca/YardWaste for collection guidelines and schedule, as well as yard waste depot information. Please place yard waste on the boulevard for collection not on the road.

Update: Power has been restored at the McConaghy Centre and the Richmond Hill Cente for the Performing Arts.
