Notice of Study Commencement - Wastewater Master Plan
Richmond Hill’s Wastewater System
City of Richmond Hill is one of nine local municipalities in York Region with a two-tier wastewater system (sometimes called a sanitary system). York Region is responsible for its Regional trunk sewers, pumping stations and treatment plants, while the City is responsible for local service connections, sewers and pumping stations. The City’s wastewater system consists of about 619 km of sewer pipes, 9,700 maintenance holes, six (6) wastewater pumping stations and over 47,500 service connections.
Wastewater Master Plan
The City of Richmond Hill is undertaking a City-wide Wastewater System Master Plan with the aim of developing a long-term strategy to support the projected future growth across the City while maintaining or enhancing performance levels in a financially responsible manner. The Master Plan will provide City staff and decision makers with a framework and guide for future wastewater infrastructure investment.
The Master Plan Process
Arcadis Professional Services (Canada) Inc. has been retained by the City to undertake the Master Plan. The Study is being conducted following Approach No.1 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (2024, as amended) under the Environmental Assessment Act. As the study progresses, the City will consult and engage with the public, government agencies, Indigenous communities and local advisory groups to shape the Master Plan and contribute towards the preferred solutions and recommendations.
To facilitate community input, a Public Open House will be held tentatively in June of 2026. The notice of the open house will be made available on the City’s website and on the Water and Wastewater Master Plan web page.
Results from this study will be documented through a number of presentations and reports that will be made available for a public review period. When available, residents, Indigenous communities and other interested persons or groups will be informed of when and where the documents can be reviewed.
