Notice of Study Commencement - Water Master Plan
Richmond Hill’s Water System
The City’s drinking water distribution system is indirectly connected to the City of Toronto and Peel Region water systems, and directly to the City of Markham, City of Vaughan and Town of Aurora systems through the York Region transmission network. The City’s system has a total of four (4) main Pressure Districts labeled 6, 7, 8 and 9, and is comprised of approximately 635 km of watermain, 7,130 valves and six (6) pumping stations that are owned and operated by York Region.
Water Master Plan
The City of Richmond Hill is undertaking a City-wide Water Master Plan as a comprehensive study of its urban water supply and distribution system with the aim of developing a long-term strategy to support the planned growth across the City while maintaining or enhancing performance levels in a financially responsible manner. The Master Plan will provide City staff and decision makers with a framework and guide for future drinking water infrastructure investment.
The Master Plan Process
The Water Master Plan is being conducted by HydraTek & Associates (A Division of FP&P HydraTek Inc.) following Approach No.1 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (2024, as amended) under the Environmental Assessment Act. As the study progresses, the City will consult and engage with the public, Indigenous communities, government agencies and local advisory groups to shape the Master Plan and contribute towards the preferred solutions and recommendations.
To facilitate community input, a Public Open House will be held tentatively in June of 2026. The notice of the open house will be made available on the City’s website and on the Water and Wastewater Master Plan web page.
Results from this study will be documented through a number of presentations and reports that will be made available for a public review period. When available, residents, Indigenous communities and other interested persons or groups will be informed of when and where the documents can be reviewed.
