Memorial will be installed to Honour Victims of Flight PS752Photo of dignitaries at Goundbreaking event for Unity Park and PS752 Memorial

Richmond Hill – Richmond Hill residents can soon look forward to another upgraded park space in our city as work has begun at Unity Park (63 Pugsley Avenue) and is anticipated to be completed by December 2026.

The park will also become the home of the PS752 Memorial, dedicated to honouring the 176 victims of Flight PS752. Designed in partnership with families of the victims, the memorial will list the names of the victims and will serve as a civic landmark in Richmond Hill.

This tragedy, which has deeply affected the community, marks Richmond Hill’s largest single-day loss of life abroad. Unity Park has been selected for its symbolic theme of togetherness. The park will serve as a space for reflection and remembrance, uniting the community in honouring the victims.

The construction of the PS752 Memorial is supported by funding from other levels of government, up to $400,000 from the Federal government and $350,000 from the Ontario government.

When complete, the park will feature new play equipment with safety surfacing, upgrades to existing walkways, new seating, pedestrian lighting, refreshed gardens and new gazebo and shade structures.

QUOTES

“The City of Richmond Hill will never forget this tragedy. This memorial serves as a commitment to our City’s unwavering support for Iranian Canadians and the families who lost loved ones on this tragic day. I hope that it will offer peace and comfort as a space for reflection and remembrance.”

-        Mayor David West

“Infrastructure is about more than the physical spaces we build—it is also about creating spaces that reflect our shared values and collective memory. This memorial will honour the victims of Flight PS752, support healing for families and loved ones, and stand as a lasting symbol of remembrance, resilience, and unity in Richmond Hill.”

-        The Honourable Gregor Robertson - Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada

“Today marks a significant milestone that stands as a testament to the virtues of different levels of government working together to develop a landmark memorial that will serve as a lasting tribute to the many lives lost on Flight PS752.”

-        The Honourable Ali Ehsassi - MP Willowdale, ON

“The renewal of Unity Park will create a symbolic gathering place that also serves as a space for remembrance—where families can come together to honour, reflect and connect. The PS752 Memorial will stand as a permanent tribute, ensuring that the names and stories of those we lost remain an enduring part of Richmond Hill’s history.”

-        The Honourable Graham McGregor, Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism

“The groundbreaking of the Flight PS752 Memorial marks an important step in ensuring that the one hundred seventy-six innocent lives taken from their loved ones at the hands of this vile regime are remembered with the dignity, respect, and permanence they deserve. This memorial is also in recognition of the unimaginable grief carried by loved ones and a testament to the strength and perseverance they have shown in the pursuit of justice.”

-        Michael Parsa – MPP Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill

“After several years of collaboration among various organizations, including the Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims, the City of Richmond Hill, the Government of Ontario, and the Government of Canada, the construction of this memorial dedicated to the passengers and crew of Flight PS752 has finally reached the implementation stage. The crime that occurred in the skies above Tehran on January 8, 2020, claiming the lives of 176 passengers and crew members, as well as an unborn child, will never be forgotten. This memorial will stand as a lasting reminder so that future generations may know that innocent lives were taken on this ground as victims of the crime committed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the rulers of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We will never forget nor shall we ever forgive.”

-        Dr. Hamed Esmaeilion - Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims
