New parks and open spaces

We're developing new parks and open spaces for you and your family to enjoy. Here's a list of projects currently underway:

Direzze to Oxford Trail Connection - Design underway

Plans are underway for a new trail connection between Oxford Street and Direzze Court. We are currently in the design stage. Opportunity to review and comment on the proposed design will be provided.

  • Direzze to Oxford Trail Connection Context Plan

Email Project Manager, John Tiberio for more information or call him at 905-747-6389.

Great Lands Park - Construction underway

Construction is underway for the development of Great Lands Park located on Northern Heights Drive, south of 16th Avenue and east of Yonge Street.  This project includes the design, construction and programming of the approximately 0.3 hectare park adjacent to the Great Lands development in the south-east corner of the growing 16th Key Development Area (KDA). The 16th KDA Policy Directions report directs for the City to secure additional park lands to the east of this park. Until such time as those lands redevelop, this project will create an interim “pop-up” park on the Great Lands park site to serve local residents. This project is comprised of two components:

  • the interim design/construction of a passive park in 2022 with a crushed granite pathway loop, new site furniture, artful houses, tree planting, perimeter swale with naturalized no-mow zones and sodded green space in the center of the park, and
  • 5 years of events/park programming by the City’s Recreation and Culture Division. The funding requested will allow for the provision of 4 events per year, 15 weeks of outdoor programming per year, and 15 weeks of art programming per year.

Residents were invited to comment on the proposed design from February 22 to March 9, 2022.

Lake to Lake Cycling Route and Walking Trail - Construction underway

The Lake to Lake Cycling Route and Walking Trail will be a 121 km recreational and commuter trail connecting Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario. It will form a key spine of York Region and the City of Toronto's active transportation network providing new opportunities for both recreational and commuter traffic to explore the region and to travel on dedicated and comfortable cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.

In Richmond Hill, the Lake to Lake route will span 14 km in a north-south direction from Bloomington Road to Highway 7, connecting with planned sections of the Lake to Lake Route in Aurora and Markham. As of January 2017, 4 km of the route within Richmond Hill are complete.

For information about this project, visit RichmondHill.ca/LaketoLake.

Macleod Estate Trail - Design Underway

Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and the City of Richmond Hill are working in partnership to construct a new 800-metre multi-use trail connection from the Oak Ridges Corridor Conservation Reserve (ORCCR) trail to the Silver Maple Road.

For information about this project, visit Oak Ridges Corridor Conservation Reserve - Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA)

Sunnywood Local Park - Construction underway

Construction is underway for a new park located at 6 Roosevelt Drive. Construction is scheduled to be completed by spring 2023, weather permitting.

As a measure of safety, the park will be closed during construction and residents are asked to refrain from entering the site. Thank you in advance for your patience during the construction phase of this project.

We also have a number of ongoing projects that will improve our parks and trails. These projects include:

Bayview Hill Community Park Revitalization - Phase 1 design underway

Plans are underway for the revitalization of Bayview Hill Community Park located at 114 Spadina Road. We are developing a master plan that will be implemented over several phases.

Residents were invited to comment on the proposed concepts from August 23 to September 19, 2021. We were very pleased with the feedback received during this comment period.  As a result, the City is planning to proceed with the implementation of Concept 2 with the following changes.  Refer to the link below to view the final masterplan for this park.

  • Add four (4) Pickleball courts with future consideration for lighting
  • Include ornamental pillars with fencing around the play zone area
  • Playground design to encourage imaginative play through custom, unique and interesting features.
  • Increase tree planting along Weldrick Road to extend the existing woodlot and create a natural buffer between the softball field and road.
  • Provide abundance of seating opportunities throughout the park.
  • Develop a planting plan that provides plenty of shade.
  • LED Light fixtures to match the existing lighting style (coach lamp) of the park and local community.
  • Increase buffer between the roadside curb edge and the playground/splash pad
  • Conduct a Parking and Traffic Assessment.

Phase 1 construction is proposed for 2023 pending budget approval.  This phase includes the soccer field, tennis and pickleball courts, playground, splash pad and ice rink, washroom as well as the multisport court and shade structures.

Rumble Pond Park South Trail Improvements - Design underway

Construction is proposed for 2024 pending budget approval.

The Toronto Region Conservation Authority has advised the City that the current playground location falls within the Patterson Creek hydraulic floodway which poses a risk to public safety should a flood occur.  The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents is of the utmost importance which is why we have decided to proceed with Playground Option 2 - New Playground at Pleasantville Park instead of replacing the playground in its current location. This new location will continue to provide local residents with a safe, vibrant and exciting playground for all to enjoy.
