Richmond Hill Storm Cleanup Continues Around the Clock
Residents reminded to keep roads & sidewalks clear of parked cars
RICHMOND HILL – City of Richmond Hill crews are continuing to clear snow from roads and sidewalks after back-to-back storms and continuous flurries dropped approximately 70 cm of snow over the last 12 days. The extreme weather has required a full deployment of the City’s winter maintenance resources.
The following is an update on current operations:
- Multiple rounds of road plowing have been completed and roads are safe and passable. Crews continue to clear and remove snow from dead ends, courts, rear laneways, the downtown core, and other hard to reach areas. Due to the volume of snow, this work will continue into next week
- Clearing of the city’s 750km of sidewalks is ongoing and will continue into next week. Primary (main) routes are cleared first followed by secondary (neighbourhood) routes. The deep, heavy snow, lack of snow storage space and high snowbanks along most roads is hampering operations and as a result some areas are taking longer than usual to complete.
- Our priority for the coming days will be sidewalks on school routes, school drop off zones and other heavily travelled areas.
Residents can help support winter operations:
- Keep roads and sidewalks clear of parked cars. Vehicles on the road or overhanging sidewalks make it difficult for road and sidewalk plows to pass through safely.
- Be a Hydrant Hero by clearing one metre of snow from around fire hydrants near your property to make them accessible in case of an emergency
- With warmer weather in the forecast for next week, help avoid water pooling on the road by clearing snow, ice and other debris from catch basins that are accessible near your home.
The City thanks residents for their patience as we work to clean up after the significant storms.
