Winter Maintenance Activities

Road Operations

A road salting operation is ongoing for all City roads.

Snow removal efforts continue throughout the City of Richmond Hill. Crews are working to clear residual snow from roadways, sidewalks, laneways, cul-de-sacs and narrow streets.

Sidewalk Operations

Sidewalk winter maintenance operations are ongoing.

How long does it take to clear the snow?

Staff work hard to clear roads, sidewalks and windrows as quickly and efficiently as possible. Primary (main) roads are cleared first, followed by secondary (neighbourhood) roads. Once the snow stops falling, we aim to clear the snow in:

Times may vary due to snowfall amounts, length of storm, time of day (e.g. rush hour), etc. Please give our crews time to complete operations before contacting Access Richmond Hill with service requests.

Winter parking and extreme weather

On-street parking

There is no parking on any street in Richmond Hill between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. from December 1 to March 31.
There is no parking on any street in Richmond Hill during Winter Events. A 'Winter Event' is declared when 5+cm of snow/icefall is forecast within the next 24 hours and snow clearing is expected.

Significant Weather Events

A 'Significant Weather Event' may be declared when an approaching or occurring extreme weather hazard has the potential to pose danger to users of roadways and sidewalks. Extreme weather conditions include freezing rain, significant snowfall, strong winds, blowing snow and reduced visibility.

During a ‘Significant Weather Event’ pedestrians and drivers should:

Use extreme caution on roads and sidewalks
Avoid non-essential travel if possible
Expect road, sidewalk and windrow clearing to take longer than usual
