Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation
Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services is excited to share that we have once again achieved Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation from the Fire Underwriters Survey. The program recognizes fire departments with tanker trucks that can deliver water more quickly to fight fires in areas far away from fire hydrants. Richmond Hill fire stations 8-2, 8-4 and 8-6, including our two new tankers, are officially part of this program.
Accredited Superior Tanker Shuttle Service is a recognized equivalency to hydrant protection. The fire department must be able to show through testing and documentation that it can continuously provide water supplies more than the minimum required for hydranted municipal-type water supplies.
Basic requirements for this program include:
- The ability to deliver a minimum of 900 L of water per minute within five minutes of the first pumper truck arriving at a fire
- The ability to maintain that water flow for two hours without stopping

What's in it for residents?
Residents living in detached homes (within 8 km by road) of these fire stations may be eligible to receive a cost reduction in their fire insurance rates from insurers in Canada. Insurers use information provided by the Fire Underwriters Survey to set rates in Canada. Most insurance companies consider this accreditation when calculating insurance rates.
You need to provide the certificate of accreditation to your insurance company to qualify for a lower rate. You may also need to provide a letter from Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services.
