We are taking steps toward becoming an Age-Friendly Community. This type of community allows people of all ages to participate in activities that keep everyone healthy and included in community life.
As the senior population continues to grow, it is more important than ever to support the health and wellbeing of older Canadians. In Canada, older adults represent the country's fastest growing age group – a trend that is expected to continue for many years to come across our nation and here at home in Richmond Hill.
We have been working with the Richmond Hill community to identify the needs of older adults and seniors across the City as we develop our Age-Friendly Community strategy. The following information outlines where we are in the process.
Developing an age-friendly strategy is an important step towards meeting the needs of an aging population and, in turn, creating an age-friendly community for all.
Did You Know? Older adults aged 55+ comprised 31.9% of Richmond Hill’s population in the 2021 Census; an increase from 24% in the 2016 Census.
As part of our work in becoming an age-friendly community, we are preparing an Age-Friendly Community Strategy. The City has engaged the services of a consultant, J Consulting Group, to help facilitate the development of this strategy.
Our Age-Friendly Community Initiative is a project under Richmond Hill’s Council's Strategic Priority: Strong Sense of Belonging.
World Health Organization Age-Friendly Cities Information |
Age-friendly communities support aging with dignity, respect and independence, and promote the inclusion of older adults in all areas of community life. Project Purpose |
The purpose of this project is to complete a Five-Year Age-Friendly Community Strategy that will provide prioritized goals and actions to guide the City’s future decisions on older adult policies, practices, services, programs and amenities. The strategy will bring together the best ideas to support older adults as they age, including coordinating services from relevant service providers and streamlining information. The Age-Friendly Community Strategy is being developed in consultation with the Age-Friendly Community Council. |
