David West is proud to be serving in his second term as Mayor for the growing City of Richmond Hill. His decision to enter municipal politics was driven by a deep commitment to making a positive impact in his community. A successful business owner in Richmond Hill for over 30 years, and an active member of the local Board of Trade, Mayor West understands the vital role that local businesses play in building a strong and vibrant community.
His passion for public service began in 2013, when he became a Ward Councillor, a position he held until he was elected as Mayor in 2022. As Mayor, he serves on numerous committees at the City and Regional level that support his vision for the city including growth management, a sustainable and healthy environment, and affordable housing. David was happy to receive the support of his Ontario Big City Mayor colleagues and assume the position of Treasurer on the OBCM Executive Committee.
Mayor West leads with a collaborative and inclusive approach, advocating for the well-being of residents, local businesses, and the City of Richmond Hill. His strong passion for environmental sustainability and his knowledge of the many benefits resilient communities contributes to his ongoing interest in a building a dynamic and equitable society. During his studies at the University of Toronto and his subsequent employment as a teacher, right up to the present day, David has enjoyed actively participating in environmental initiatives.
David places value on cultural diversity and the gifts that all residents contribute, and he continues to foster positive relationships with our Indigenous treaty partners, and he firmly believes that diversity strengthens community.
A husband and father, David has called Richmond Hill home for more than 30 years. He is an engaged citizen, a patron of the visual arts, and a dedicated naturalist. A lifelong learner, he enjoys reading broadly and spending time in nature. Above all, he is committed to supporting Richmond Hill’s efforts to build a vibrant, inclusive, and connected community of neighbours.
